Rebecca Johnson - Flute

Rebecca is one of Australia’s leading freelance flautists. Originally from Adelaide, she has been a long term casual player with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra since 1999 and has worked with many distinguished conductors including Jeffrey Tate, Vladamir Ashkenazy and Arvo Volmer.  She has recorded the complete Sibelius and Schumann Symphonies while on contract as second flute with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and was part of Wagner’s Ring Cycle recorded for DECCA in 2004.  

Rebecca is also a casual player with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and Auckland Philharmonic, appearing in 2017 as Guest Principal Flute for a subscription series. Rebecca has been working on full time contract with Orchestra Victoria since 2014, in the roles of Associate Principal flute, Tutti flute and is currently Acting Principal Piccolo.  She is also currently Principal flute of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.  Rebecca obtained her Master of Arts (Performance) from the Royal Academy of Music in London in 2013, studying with Professor Michael Cox, Karen Jones and Patricia Morris (Piccolo) and completed her Bachelor of Music at the University of Adelaide with first class honours studying under Geoffrey Collins.
